Discovering Room for More: What I Learned When I Chose Home

15 Truths God Taught Me After Leaving My Career —
and a Bonus One From My Husband

For the Working Mom Who Dreams of
Becoming a Stay-at-Home Mom

A Quiet Yes That Changed Everything

When I stepped away from nearly two decades of public service to focus on my home and family, I had no idea just how much God would teach me in the quiet, slow, unseen moments. What began as a leap into the unknown became one of the most transformative decisions I have ever made.

I discovered a deep sense of joy, peace, purpose, and fulfillment at home—and now, my heart’s desire is to share the lessons I’ve learned with other women seeking the same. If you’re sensing a nudge, a growing desire to slow down and make room for what matters most, I pray these lessons will encourage your heart and confirm what’s possible on the other side of your ‘yes’.

What I Learned About Myself

Leaving the workforce wasn’t just a logistical change—it was a profound internal shift. God used this season to show me who I am and how He sees me. Now that I have more time and space to reflect and listen, I hear Him and see Him more clearly—leading, guiding, protecting, and teaching me. All things—our stories, our callings, and our seasons—begin with Him, are sustained by Him, and reveal His glory to a watching world.

  • My worth is not based on my accomplishments. God loves me for who I am, not what I produce.
  • I am replaceable at work—but never at home. My role in my children’s lives can’t be outsourced.
  • My education isn’t wasted. Everything I’ve learned and all my experiences shaped me to serve and bless the most important people in my life.
  • It’s okay to rest. Rest isn’t laziness—it’s a spiritual act of trust and faithfulness. We are more useful to God and others when we are healthy.
  • God didn’t just call me home—He invited me closer to Him. Coming home was about more than motherhood. It was about becoming who He created me to be.

What I Learned About Being Home

Home became more than a location. It became a sacred space where transformation, worship, and purpose meet. Even in the simplest acts, we fulfill our purpose when we live for Him.

  • Home is a holy place. The routine becomes sacred when done with love and intention.
  • Slowing down revealed what truly matters. Within the gift of margin and presence, I began to see my children and my husband more fully—and it changed everything.
  • Provision comes in unexpected ways. Sometimes God provides one small step at a time, but He always provides.
  • Stewardship brings freedom. Managing our time, money, and energy wisely has allowed us to do more with less.
  • Being available is powerful. My presence has opened the door to deeper connection and divine moments—at home, in our church, and in our community.

What I Learned About Our Family Dynamic

Shifting to a home-centered life reshaped how we love, live, and grow together as a family.

  • My children deserve a present and emotionally available mom—not just a stressed or rushed one.
  • Children learn more from what they see than what they’re told. Living out my values is the legacy I want to leave.
  • Marriage grows when I’m not constantly rushing. Our family rhythm thrives when I’m peaceful.
  • Tending to my children’s needs isn’t an inconvenience—it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to build trust and connection.
  • The fruit isn’t always immediate, but it is eternal. Seeds sown in love, presence, and faith will bear fruit for generations.

BONUS — From My Husband

As I was preparing to write this post, I asked my husband what surprised him the most about my decision to become a stay-at-home mom. His answer gave me insight into the heart of a man who longs to provide and protect:

“Having you at home freed me up to focus on my work, and my stress level decreased tremendously. I know you and the girls are safe, together, and there’s flexibility for me to do what I need to do well. I no longer have to rush from meetings to school pickup, or worry about our daughters—I know you’re there.”

If You’re Considering Becoming a Stay-at-Home Mom

If you’re wondering whether God might be leading you to step away from your career to focus on home, here are three truths I want you to remember:

  • You are not crazy for wanting more time with your family. That desire was placed in your heart for a reason.
  • Your skills, education, and experience are never wasted. They’ll be used in new ways—often more meaningful than you imagined.
  • Saying yes to home is not a step backward—it’s a step into purpose. Even if the world doesn’t understand, God sees the eternal impact.
  • Life is a marathon, not a sprint. When we live at the pace of grace instead of performance, we create space for joy, peace, and purpose to flourish—for ourselves and the people we love.
