Am I Still Me Without My Job? Rediscovering Identity After Leaving Work to Become a Stay-at-Home Mom

“You are called according to His purpose.” – Romans 8:28

Who Am I Without My Job Title?

If you’ve stepped away from your career—or are thinking about it—you may be facing a question that lingers quietly beneath the surface:

Am I still me without my job?

You’ve worked hard, achieved goals, and poured your energy into your profession. But now that you’re home—or preparing to come home—you may feel like you’ve lost something: clarity, purpose, even identity.

Friend, I’ve walked this road. I’ve wrestled with these same questions. And in that quiet, God met me—not with a new title, but with a restored identity.

This post is for the woman wondering who she is in this new season—and whether she still matters when her calendar no longer revolves around work.

I’ve lived this question.

For nearly twenty years, I dedicated myself to a career in public service—serving families and communities, leading programs, and managing teams. I attended every leadership training my organization provided and even pursued some on my personal time, always working to advance my skills and further my impact. The opportunities were great. The accolades, mentorship, and impact were real. And yet, for years, I was quietly drowning in dissatisfaction.

Despite everything I had built, I felt unseen. Misaligned. Misunderstood.

On the outside, I looked successful. On the inside, I was asking, Is this all there is? Is this who I’m meant to be? And slowly, God began to stir something deeper in me—something I had buried under years of striving: my purpose.

Your Title May Change—But Your Identity in Christ Remains

I want to reassure you today: You are still you without your job.

You are still seen, chosen, called, and deeply loved by God.

When I finally made the decision to leave my government job, I was scared. It felt like losing a part of myself. But it was also one of the most liberating and healing decisions I’ve ever made.

The day I turned in my resignation, I had no backup plan—just a deep desire to align my life with God’s will. That leap of faith launched me into a season of rediscovering who I was without a title, without a business card, without a clear next step.

And in that space, God met me, not with a new job description, but with a renewed identity.

You Are Not a Failure—You Are in Transition

Walking away from a job, especially one you’ve worked hard for, can feel like failure. But what if it’s not the end of your success story—but the beginning of a deeper one?

God often uses transitions to reveal what we can’t see in the noise of our busyness. In my quiet, God began to speak. I read Scripture, journaled, and prayed, “Lord, if I’m going to work again, let it be in alignment with my purpose.”

It wasn’t immediate, but it was transformative. God began to show me how my pain had prepared me to help others. He reminded me that my story mattered—and that writing it was part of my calling.

My “Break” Became My Breakthrough

When I first came home, it was meant to be temporary—a short “break” from the chaos of work. I assumed I would return to the workforce after a season of rest.

But something holy happened when I gave myself fully to my role at home.

God met me there—in the quiet, in the ordinary–I found peace, healing, and purpose.

He revealed that I was still needed, still valued, and still capable of having a powerful impact right where He had me.

From that space, my book Unbraided was born.

This blog, Discovering Home, was born.

What felt like a pause in my career became a launching pad into my purpose.

God has been faithful. He has provided.

He continues to lead me forward—step by step—even when I can’t see the whole road.

And He will do the same for you.

Feeling the Tug to Come Home?

If you’re feeling that gentle tug to step away from work and come home—to focus on your family, your faith, your well-being—it may not just be a fleeting thought. It could be the Holy Spirit gently redirecting your path.

Yes, you’ve worked hard. You’ve built a life and a career with dedication and sacrifice. And still… something deeper is stirring. You sense there’s more—something richer, quieter, more purposeful.

But the moment you think about making the change, the fear creeps in: “How will we make it financially?”

I understand. I’ve lived that tension.

But I want to gently offer this: not knowing exactly what’s next could be the very gift God is offering you.

A chance to breathe.

To rest.

To reset your nervous system.

To realign your heart with His.

To learn how to live present and peaceful at home.

This may be your invitation to surrender striving and embrace stillness. To walk by faith, not sight.

And sister, God is faithful.

If He’s leading you into this new season, you can trust Him to walk you through it—one step at a time.

“In quietness and trust is your strength.” – Isaiah 30:15
